XOM Follow Up

XOM was a trade idea (short) that I covered in some detail on March 24th, it is down somewhere around 5% since then, however it is the longer term that makes XOM attractive as a large double top that looks pretty ripe for a break. Since I covered XOM in great detail on the 24th (linked above), I'll just touch on the macro situation and concentrate a bit more on the tactical situation.

The gist of the idea was that these two H&S tops in XOM are part of a larger double top, the pattern implied target for a double top in XOM (of course this would be a longer term trend) would be around $45.

This is the most recent H&S top, which I believe is the second top of a larger double top, it broke support yesterday, which means we would expect to see a volatility shakeout to the upside.

The daily MS chart appears to agree this is a double top.

The longer term charts can be found in the original post, it is the shorter term tactical entry that I'm more concerned with. I don't know that XOM will be able to post a severe shakeout to the upside being the market accumulation for a bounce wasn't huge. Or in other words, after the market bounce which we first expected yesterday and then saw it setting up as the day went on, I'd think XOM would have trouble moving up against the market's move down once the bounce is complete. In the near term, although XOM is just below the neckline, the short term charts suggest the volatility shakeout move as you can see the positive divergence here on  2 min chart and below on a 1 min chart.

At this point the best I can do is guess as to the probable target and the area in which I would like to look at XOM for a short entry, I'm thinking around $84.50, although we'll have to let the market tell us and 3C to confirm the best entry point, but for now, I'll be setting alerts for price in this area to take a look at XOM and see if the short term charts reverse to distribution on the move.

I suppose if you are a longer term trader and don't mind sitting through some volatility, you might consider phasing in to XOM. When phasing in, I prefer a 3 step phase in period. I might consider adding 1/3 or 1/4 of the intended position here, that gives some coverage in case XOM turns violently down. The next 1/3 or 25% I would be looking to add in the target area or perhaps above if we can get it, at this point I would want to see some 3C distribution taking place. The last portion I would add when XOM shows me that it is breaking below the neckline again just below $83. There are several variations of this phasing in theme, if there's a decent shakeout move higher then the target area and 3C is VERY negative, I might consider adding the rest of the position there, that method gives you  a little better risk profile as a stop can be placed closer to the bulk of the entry.

I would set some price alerts if you are interested in XOM and feel free to contact me for 3C updates.

Quick Market Update

From the market open at the green arrow, the $USD saw some strength as you can see the Euro dipped below the open. If the recent trend keeps up, we tend to see the dollar slide a bit after the EU close and afternoon gains. I wouldn't expect huge early gains in the market, it would have trouble holding them throughout the rest of the day.

Compares to the Euro in red, the SPY held up pretty well on that bout of dollar strength.

ES broke through its VWAP on the downside during this move, but is now sitting right below VWAP. The 3C persistent negative divergence in ES, like the previous bounces, is still intact.

AAPL

AAPL is still doing what I suspected...
While I would still expect the market to put in more upside (it may be a bit too early to put in too big of a gain), AAPL is falling apart, this is really the last piece of the puzzle I've been looking for.

USO Update

USO appears to be consolidating here...

Watch out for a head fake move below the triangle. I see no reason USO shouldn't head higher.

GLD a Little Longer Look

I have said it more then once, GLD and SLV are my LEAST FAVORITE trades to try to analyze. There's known and proven manipulation in the silver market and the COMEX seems to simply be an arm of Wall Street, doing favors for the likes of JP Morgan who inherited a large silver short when they took over Bear Stearns. Blythe Masters of JPM fought off the viral web campaign to break JPM's short and when it appeared that was happening and SLV crossed over the $30 area where the battle to contain SLV (silver) went on for months, SLV shot up like a rocket to $48 plus dollars. It wasn't long after that, (days) that the COMEX initiated margin hikes. OK, SLV was getting volatile, a margin hike sounds reasonable, but 5 consecutive margin hikes, nearly 1 every day and even after the uptrend in SLV was broken, looked excessive and it appeared to me that the F_E_D may have called in a favor to the COMEX to help out JPM who helped out the F_E_D when they took over Bear Stearns. From there, SLV dropped over 30% in less then a month and ultimately back down to $25. JPM could have easily made some nice money adding to their silver short near $48 and covering at $25 or so. These are the kind of events that can't be predicted, they come out of the blue and unless you have a direct line to one of the key players, you are not going to know about it until it's too late. That is part of the reason I don't particularly care for the hysteria surrounding precious metals.

From personal experience (this is not scientific), I have suspected a bubble in gold. I know the arguments for gold and they are strong, dollar debasement, inflation, stagflation, supply, etc. I also have seen a few bubbles in my time and I have studied just about every bubble since the Dutch Tulip Craze. The one thing all bubbles have in common are the words, "This is different". The Dutch Tulip mania was certainly different, a rare disease caused tulips to have spectacular colors, that's different, that doesn't happen much. However when it got to the point that one tulip bulb was worth the same as a home, it was getting out of control.

The Tech bubble was different, it was revolutionary, still it popped. The housing bubble! I had a lot of friends who were stay at home moms who became real estate speculators. You couldn't go to a party without all of the talk being about who was flipping what house. In South Fl where I live, the argument was, "They can't build any further west, it's the Everglades. This is all the supply there is", yet even after 2008, there were more cranes dotting the Miami skyline then there were towers and nearly every tower was dark at night.

So once again, those same friends are buying up silver eagles and every piece of scrap they can get. I've already pointed out to a friend how some silver jewelry bought at a garage sale was merely silver plated as a link had a chip on it and showed him how some silver eagles had seams on the edge of the coin, clear counterfeits. Mania? What could possibly go wrong? Confiscation? It's happened once in the US already, but that's just a wild thought.

Here are the charts and again, I'm not thrilled to try to analyze GLD.

The last time we looked at buying GLD on a long term basis was during 2011. GLD had been tracking the 150 day moving average very well and that seemed to always be the perfect place to buy on a pullback so we were going to wait for the next pullback to the 150 ma.

However, when that pullback came, I was not thrilled and instead of calling it a buy, I said, "Let's wait and see". The problem was how GLD arrived at the 150, a very volatile move down in the yellow box and rising volatility is often a sign of a top.

GLD went on to form a large triangle, again another sign of a potential top after an extended uptrend, then GLD broke below the triangle and the 150 day ma that had been support for years-glad I didn't make the long call. As is almost always the case, I was looking for the volatility shakeout after such an important break, it came at the green arrows and set up a nice head fake trade we took a little over a month ago for a 211% return in days on some GLD puts.  GLD is back below the triangle's apex and the 150 moving average and the average is starting to turn down.

Daily MoneySteam went negative at the very top in GLD and leading negative since.

Compared to the SPX in red, GLD has acted strangely, sometimes correlated to the market (green arrow and box), sometimes like in the yellow box, looking like a flight to safety trade. As to what it is doing now in the red box... ?

On a 15 min chart we can see correlation with the SPX, we can also see breaks of that correlation.

On a 5 min chart in the yellow boxes, GLD has looked like a flight to safety trade, other times it hasn't.
I suspect this probably has more to do with coincidence, cycles the market has set up and currency correlations.

Over all the 60 min 3C chart has been moving lower with GLD, in the red box you can see the reason for our head fake trade in GLD with puts.

To be absolutely honest, I like 3C because when it gives a strong signal like yesterday telling us the market would not see follow through selling, but rather a bounce today, there's a strong edge. When I don't see a strong edge, I prefer to move to the next chart. I don't see a strong long term edge in GLD, I see a lot of confusion, no really great correlations that help light the way and some long term signals such as the triangle and the dropping 150 day m.a. that tell me, on a long term basis, I'd rather just leave gold to those who think they have an edge, I don't see it. On a short term basis, I'm willing to take any trades that show a high probability and low risk.

AAPL off to an interesting start.

You may remember this post yesterday, The Three Pillars. I compared Tech, Financials and Energy as well as AAPL using 3C and found that Tech looked the worst of the positive divergences and I suspected Financials would lead the bounce.

I also said I had a "Gut" feeling that AAPL would underperform the broad market and this would be part of a sign that we are standing on the edge of the cliff as AAPL is the ultimate market bellwether stock.

Thus far this morning, the SPX +1.02% , the Dow 30 +.86% , the Russell 2000 +1.58%, The NASDAQ 100 +1.11% and AAPL... .84%

So thus far, AAPL is lagging the broad market, which is strange as AAPL is the go to stock to lift the market!

Tech is up 1.02%, Financials 1.67% and Energy .78%. I thought Financials would lead the move.

It's too early to draw any conclusions, but it is an interesting start.

EIA Report

Just released...

PriorActual
Crude oil inventories (weekly change)9.0 M barrels2.8 M barrels
Gasoline (weekly change)-1.5 M barrels-4.3 M barrels
Distillates (weekly change)0.0 M barrels-4.0 M barrels

I'm not sure what the consensus was for crude, but the build of 2.8 mm barrels was a drop from the 9 mm barrels last week.

Gasoline inventories plunged as did distillates.

Initial USO reaction...

A nice spike on volume.

I'll try to find the details on the report....

Opening Indications

All I can say is, "Right on track"!

The last two decent bounces in the market were here...

Both were about 2 days , both also had a rare and odd event occur in 3C on ES.

Normally 3C on ES is excellent in giving intraday signals, but during both of those bounces, 3C on ES did something I had only seen once before prior to these bounces, that was it stopped giving intraday signals and instead was in a persistent leading negative divergence that just kept moving lower and lower. I saw the start of that last night as ES crossed above yesterday's "U" range, and here it is again and I'm happy to see it, although it makes calling the end of the bounce more difficult with ES, so we have to use the averages.

Thus far in the averages, on the open they have done what I had hoped and expected to see, they haven't moved!

DIA 2 min isn't any higher than yesterday's positive divergence-it's the same for all the other averages as well.

 QQQ 2 min

SPY 1 and 2 min below.

So thus far everything is happening as expected.

EIA Petroleum Report 10:30

I'm still holding the USO May $38 calls that are slightly in the money right now, we have the EIA Petroleum report at 10:30, but thus far it looks like the falling dollar overnight (I showed you last night vs the Euro) looks to be responsible, yet there are still very solid positive divergences in USO.

USO 5 min positive divergence yesterday near the lows

USO 15 min leading positive divergence

 30 min leading positive divergence

 60 min leading positive divergence

The $USD's drop on the open.

The EUR/USD since yesterday's close...

We have had many instances in the past with the EIA report, it seems to be one of the most leaked reports on Wall Street, yet we often see some strange initial behavior in USO right after the report is released. I'll be looking for higher prices in USO, especially given the 30-60 min positive divergences and will hold the position as long as I can until it shows short term negative divergences suggesting that the position may be under distribution. If I had to guess, I'd say the report has been leaked.

Our Bounce?

As you know yesterday 3C was signaling a bounce, I went in to some detail in several posts yesterday why we should see such a bounce and then 3C confirmed it. Overnight ES held up, the catalyst may be called "AA Beats" or "Italy sells Treasuries", but the accumulation for the bounce was in place before wither of those events, however financial media always want to give you a reason why. I hope at least this one time, you know what the real reason is as we saw it develop yesterday with our own eyes BEFORE AA beat and BEFORE Italy's auction, and thus you now know who controls the market in the near term and we'll be using the market for the same reasons they'll be using the market.

Here's ES overnight and in to the open...

The one interesting thing on this chart is the persistent 3C negative divergence, it just keeps moving lower and will do so in to the bounce, we have witnessed this on the last two bounces in the market, this should tell you what smart money is doing in to higher prices.
