ES Update

The ES Update is actually quite interesting...
First, 3C seems to be working well on the intraday ES chart, calling out 2 negative divergences and now as I proposed in the last post/market update, there's a positive divergence developing; this divergence could become bigger or it could just make an intraday move higher, my guess is it becomes a bit bigger first.

As for CONTEXT for ES overnight and to 10:51 a.m.

What is interesting is that yesterday we had all the positive divergence (even though they were on short term timeframes which led me to call them "noise within the trend" as we expected there would be), the underlying assets such as currencies, credit, yields, etc that make up the ES model have been trading higher than ES or in other words, the other risk assets that normally trade up with ES are trading up giving the model a higher position than ES, so it seems traders in these other markets also expected a move higher or at least not a crash even after AAPL's horrible earnings and confirmation of a UK double dip recession.

Market Update

Although the divergences from yesterday that seem to have kept ES on an upward trajectory overnight and moved most of the averages above yesterday's close this morning, seems to be a shorter term move within the downtrend, or what I've called "boise", I'm not convinced this move is over yet, even though we've seen price pullback below yesterday's close in the averages. Early trade is the most deceptive trade, but here's what I'm looking at on the charts.

Starting with Financials where I opened a position in FAS (3x leveraged long financials) for a short term trade...
The 3 min intraday chart shows yesterday's divergence and thus far this morning everything looks like it should, but...

The 5 min trend of Financials is stronger than the 3 min chart and it still looks like it has plenty of power left in it, this is why I'm skeptical of this move being over and we have the same thing to different degrees in most of the averages.

As for FAS...

The 2 min positive divergence at yesterday's afternoon lows, yet the downside this morning from the gap higher is not confirmed as 3C is still in a leading positive position.

The 3 min chart also has a bigger divergence than what I would expect for an upside move thus far, it should be able to push FAS higher.

The DIA 1 min (fastest chart) positive from yesterday and on the move down this a.m. note the positive divergence developing just now.

The IWM 2 min chart is showing similar action.

And the longer term IWM 5 min chart has a much bigger divergence that should produce a bigger upside move than we have thus far seen.

The QQQ 1 min is also acting like the DIA and IWM right now with a newly forming positive divergence after the averages filled the gap from today (obviously not the QQQ).

The SPY 1 min is in line, but..

The 3 min trend is bigger that the move we have seen to the upside, this is why I'm not convinced the upside move or noise within the downtrend is over.

Overnight and In to the Open

Talk about a reversal of the sewing circle rumors, where yesterday it seemed Spain would be left hung out to dry on its own as Germany sought to preserve its Aaa status, overnight there are reports that Germany is pressing Spain to take a full sovereign bailout rather than just a banking system bailout. I will take a victory lap here because the day the banking bailout intensions were released, we saw the problems with debt subordination and said this would force Spain in to a worse situation in which the entire country would need a bailout. How is it that we could see this the same day the banking bailout was announced, but all of the brains of the EU couldn't?

Since Moody's downgraded the outlook of the purse strings of the temporary bailout mechanism in the EU, the EFSF, they also took the additional step of downgrading the EFSF outlook from stable to negative, talk is that Germany (and probably the other 3 countries that still retain their Aa rating) will not contribute as much to the bailout fund, more uncertainty in the market place.

UK GDP overnight dipped -0.7% instead of consensus on -0.2%, this is the sharpest fall since 2009, not one economist surveyed by Reuters even imagined a number so bad, one that firmly puts the UK in a Double-Dip Recession with 3 quarters of recessionary GDP.

However, just like the WSJ article yesterday released just before the close was nothing but a rehash of F_E_D commentary already public (but it was released just before the market closed so the headline was all that mattered), the ECB's Notwotny (kind of sounds like a Harry Potter character), said the ESM bailout mechanism "may" receive a banking license, this is old and dead news as well, but enough to keep the market interested. This is not an issue under discussion, it's not even an active issue, but the press release is all that mattered, even though the ECB has rejected the idea more than once.

This morning one of our core shorts, CAT beat on earnings, but downgraded their outlook, can anyone guess what the downgraded outlook was attributed to? If you said China, gold star for you. It seem there's still a lot of doubt about China's ability to engineer a soft landing, of course their opaque political system can do whatever they want, but I mean in reality.

Gold/GLD are both up this morning, I can only speculate that this has to do with the WSJ story from yesterday, THERE IS NOTHING NEW IN THE STORY, it was designed to lift the market on headline scanning algos and thus far it has, interesting how there were positive divergences before the story's release. In any case, gold acting as the sentiment indicator for future easing is up and I'm quit sure it's on the WSJ article that John Hilsenrath published as he is seen as the unofficial mouthpiece of the F_E_D.

Finally at 10 a.m. New Home Sales came out and missed...

The debate about the Housing recovery goes on as the report missed 370k consensus coming in at 30k.  This is the first miss since OCTOBER OF LAST YEAR!!!! This is also the biggest miss to expectations since October of 2010.

As for ES...

ES from yesterday's close to the Euro open at the green arrow (3 am EDT)

ES from the Euro. open to present.

The thing that strikes me is the solid uptrend, despite the UK in a confirmed double dip recession, the positive divergences (short term) were there and they've already been fulfilled to some extent with the market moving higher instead of lower on AAPL and UK data. As I have mentioned before, when the Wall Street sets up a cycle, thy rarely let it fail.

So now we look for the reversal of the short term cycle/noise in the downtrend, updates will follow...

Opening Indications

I can't say I'm surprised that we are up this morning in most of the averages, I am surprised as to the reason as it seemed AAPL would be the reason, but the divergences son't tell us what or why, just that there's underlying strength, in this case short term. Last night's closing indications post made this clear.

From last night's post linked above after it was clear AAPL wasn't taking the market higher:

"**UPDATE-AAPL's earnings aren't impressing anyone and the real item that counts, guidance is lighter than usual and that's saying something for a company that always guides lower.

The short term charts still have several short term positive divergences and we still have a long night ahead of us, we'll see whether we get the short term move up that many of these charts seem to indicate, the longer term and more important charts have stayed negative and that's what we expect the trend to be, although it will be scattered with noise here and there/counter trend moves."

And even without AAPL, the short term chart were right.
 Here's a quick look...

The DIA posted a nice positive divergence yesterday afternoon, although on the short term timeframes.

The IWM did as well, this is a 5 min chart.

The Q's are a little lagging, but they are picking up this morning after the open.

And the SPY positive divergence from yesterday.

Overnight and in to the open post coming...

Remember these are short term indications for a move higher, one I have called noise in the trend.

WOW, Here's Another WHOPPER

When we see 3C divergences we really don't know what smart money knows, we can make guesses based on the obvious like AAPL is reporting tonight, but we don't know. I think the timing of this article from the WSJ coming out when it did in relation to AAPL earnings is interesting and if you want my opinion as to whether Wall Street is hot-wired in to what the f_E_D is doing and saying, my answer would be a resounding, "yes".

As for the story, again from the WSJ

Fed Sees Action if Growth Doesn't Pick Up Soon

In any case, if this is about anything, I doubt the release is about a smoke screen for AAPL earnings and has more to do with a probable Spanish sovereign default with the Northern countries that hold the purse strings having been put on warning yesterday that if they keep handing out bailouts, they can kiss their Aaa rating good bye.

Amazingly FAS is still in the green

Price paid for FAS=$80.29, current price in AH $80.75

AAPL's Whopper

As I mentioned in an earlier post, when MSFT issued a dividend it was the end of the growth phase for MSFT. Core short positions in AAPL are still in place, no AAPL longs, the long term charts just look too bad as you can see in this update from today, pay attention especially to the longer term 60 min chart.

The above post is interesting to re-read as it shows very clearly that the AAPL bull flag seems to have been constructed rather than being natural and there's no accumulation in it, take a look at the post again, this may seem paranoid, but these are the kinds of games Wall Street plays every day although this one took a little more effort.

Earnings:

  • Revenue: $35 billion versus street expectations of  $37.1 billion
  • EPS: $9.32 versus street expectations of $10.36
  • iPhone: 26 million versus street expectations of 29 million
  • iPad: 17 million versus street expectations of 16 million
  • Gross Margin: 42.8% versus street expectations of 44%
  • Mac sales: 4 million versus street expectations of 4.1 million
  • September quarter revenue: $34 billion versus street expectations of $38 billion
  • September EPS: $7.65 versus street expectations of $10.22
  • Apple's cash on hand: $117 billion, up $7 billion from last quarter

Market Update-Closing Indications

Last night I showed you the short term charts of yesterday's action which started out very strong (with regard to 3C underlying trade), the rest of the afternoon those charts almost all deteriorated, I was very interested today to see which way these short term charts would go, if they continued to deteriorate badly then we would likely be close to making a new, serious move lower, however if there were to maintain or improve, then the chances of some upside noise within the trend becomes more probable, but that also allows us to enter positions to trade with the trend at much better prices with far less risk.

The deterioration in the charts late day yesterday carried over in to price today as we'd expect, but much of the underlying 3C trade activity today in to lower prices (at least in the short term -day or so) became stronger as the afternoon went on.

**UPDATE-AAPL's earnings aren't impressing anyone and the real item that counts, guidance is lighter than usual and that's saying something for a company that always guides lower.

Th short term charts still have several short term positive divergences and we still have a long night ahead of us, we'll see whether we get the short term move up that many of these charts seem to indicate, the longer term and more important charts have stayed negative and that's what we expect the trend to be, although it will be scattered with noise here and there/counter trend moves.

Here are the charts for the major averages as of the close...

DIA 1 min stayed leading positive all day. What is impressive is that the 3C positive leading divergence didn't make any lower lows with price.

The 2 min chart was negative at the bump up in price yesterday afternoon, from there the selling took the DIA lower as there was no institutional support, but they seem to have stepped in and in stronger fashion as the day wore on, as you can see the positive divergence kept moving higher. A lot of times the 1 and 2 min charts are indicative of middle men loading up their account in advance of a known move to come, they are the buyer/seller of last resort on a market order and before the advent of HFT, about 30% of any given stock's volume per day was either the market maker or the specialist trading their own account. In any case, thy fill the larger orders so they typically know what's coming down the road. To me this looks like some stocking up for a move higher (still noise), but not so much as to change the trend assumption. As I said last week before a move down even started (as we were looking for that to be the next trend), nothing moves straight down or up and there's unprecedented volatility, ATR and game playing in this market, we have to expect counter trend moves with in the trend.

 DIA 5 min relative positive

ES leading positive at a new high on the session.

IWM 3 min leading positive divergence

IWM 5 min leading positive divergence

QQQ with a strange initial leading positive move, followed by downside and an even stronger leading positive move very close to the EOD.

QQQ 1 min close up of just today.

QQQ 2 min is leading positive, but again most of the leading action was late in the day and very fast.

QQQ 5 min relative positive divergence-this would suggest (at least at this point) the stronger positive divergences on the shorter timeframes have begun to effect the 5 min timeframe, but the shorter timeframes are not yet strong enough (and may never be) to move the 5 min higher than a relative positive divergence which is the weakest. It could also signify that any move to the upside will indeed be weak, it may not appear that way in price initially, but the strength and duration of the move are kind of capped by the divergences' strength.

 SPY 1 min leading positive

 SPY 2 min leading positive

SPY 3 min relative positive followed by a leading positive move.

SPY 5 min relative positive followed by a leading positive move.

AAPL Update

There's some more change, this is not the kind of signal I would consider an earnings leak, but it does look like something that maybe goes like this, AAPL gets an initial knee jerk reaction higher and that action is faded to the downside moving forward.
