Market Update

The intraday negative divergences keep building, the IWM is seeing the bulk of it with SRTY and URTY (3x long IWM ETF) confirming, however the SPY and QQQ are also seeing migration, so far in the IWM's case, the migration has been quite fast.

I don't just provide market updates so you can see what's going on, but so you can use them. One of our members, Tina (hope you don't mind T) came to us not so long ago as a novice, she used yesterday's information to put on a trade that is more risk than I'd usually take, but in the market the only thing that is risk free has already happened and you can't make any money from that. In an email exchange this morning she said,

"Thanks!!  And, good morning!  Yes, I was L (long) from yesterday's low with weeklies (188s), sold for 4xs... happy dance."

So once again, these updates are not just to know what's going on in the market at the time, but she used them to put together an ultrashort term, leveraged trade and sold them this morning for 4 times what she bought them for, congratulations Tina.

The charts...
SPY intraday 1 min continues to lead negative even deeper, now at new leading negative lows.

Here's an intraday view of the same chart.

This is the SPY 2 min which saw no confirmation which it could have confirmed by 10:15 this morning if it were there, we are seeing some migration to the 2 min here.

The SPY/NYSE Custom TICK Indicator was shown earlier, more and more stocks are closing on a down tick as you can see by my custom histogram which is just about to go negative meaning more stocks are closing down each bar than up, the TICK is the number of all NYSE stocks closing up less those closing down for the bar which is 1 min.).

QQQ 1 min w/ yesterday's positive divegrence and another failure to confirm which on a 1 min. timeframe could have happened 15 minutes after the open if there were confirmation, instead it seems there has been distribution in to the gap up.

This is the intraday view of the same chart.

You can see there's clear migration to the 2 min chart, this is what we were wondering about yesterday, but it seems a few things have been cleared up, did you know some of the most profitable traders are Congressional Staffers? Ever wonder why? It would be events just like this, imagine being John Kerry's assistant and trading what you over hear.

QQQ 3 min is starting to see migration (negative) as well.

IWM 1 min, we most often see divergences in flat zones along VWAP , note how flat IWM is here during this leading negative 1 min divergence.

We have migration leading negative on the IWM 2 min as well

And migration of the negative to the IWM 3 min

This is URTY, a 3x leveraged long R2K or IWM which is showing the same signal or confirmation

Its 2 min chart is seeing the same migration as well

And the 3 min chart.

The inverse 3x short IWM, SRTY is showing the opposite, leading positive divergences in the same timeframes, this is confirmation since all of these trade different volume, there wouldn't be the same signals unless something were going on, that's the reminder of "3C", "Compare, compare, compare".

Trade Ideas: IWM / SRTY

I also like SRTY, 3x short IWM, this position I may actually like a bit more as it is more useful (to me) as a longer term trading position, I just already have good market coverage in leveraged ETFs via SPXU and SQQQQ, but I'd certainly consider a SRTY long position here in place of the IWM puts or in addition to it as long as the 2 positions are managed as 1 position for risk management purposes.

Trade Idea: IWM Puts

With this parabolic move in the IWM as well as the divergences and what seems to fit together nicely with yesterday's positive intraday divegrence as well as this morning's Putin comments which are clearly showing a disconnect between what he says and what's going on on the ground and in the Black Sea, I like the short term trade in trying to take advantage of volatility and the IWM's parabolic move.

I'm going to open an IWM April $120 Put position.

IWM Continues to Show the Most Deterioration

You saw the last 1 min chart, now the price action also looks very much like a reversal process/ rounding top. The divergence is moving over to the 2 min chart in migration ...

IWM 1 min leading negative intraday looks like selling the news from yesterday's positive divegrence or small accumulation.

The 2 min chart is now seeing what appears to be migration of the negative divegrence meaning it's getting stronger.

Market Update, IWM seeing most action

There still hasn't been any confirmation of the gap up accept an attempt by the IWM which seemed to turn quickly, now it is losing ground on the 1 min chart quite quickly.

If there was a leak of something to come yesterday and that is why we saw the positive divegrence building intraday, it would make sense that they'd be selling the news, "Buy the rumor, sell the news". I really don't think something as big as this Russian policy reversal comes in a few hours overnight so there's a chance or even probability that Wall St. got wind of something coming today, thus yesterday's divergence and the reason they didn't let it fire off to the upside yesterday.
The IWM is seeing the most leading downside in 3C right now, if I'm at all close to being correct, than this would be the "Selling the news" aspect 3C is now showing.

The Q's still have not confirmed which they could have easily done on a 1 min chart by now.

The SPY has not confirmed either.

My SPy/TICK custom indicator shows more NYSE stocks are starting to tick down as the morning wears on.

Yesterday's Divergence

Remember yesterday's positive divegrence? One has to at least wonder if there was some information or leak of today's massive Russian statement that they were in essence, "Just training".

In yesterday's post, Quick Market Update I even estimated what I thought the rough level of price would be based on yesterday's divergence (keeping in mind that the duration of the divergence has a lot to do with how long it can sustain the proceeding move and it was a single day yesterday). In any case I gave a rough target based on the divergence and reversal process...

"In any case the reversal pattern looks a little like an inverse H&S bottom, you could pull a price based target from that, for the SPY that would be about $186.50."

Today's SPY prices aren't that far off the estimate...
The SPY had the strongest relative performance in yesterday's divergence and was expected to do the best as it was the only of the 4 majors that reached a 5 min chart shown above. As you can see the SPY isn't too far off the target estimation from yesterday's post of $186.50-ish.

As for the 1 min divergences forming yesterday and their ability to confirm the gaps this morning...
The SPY 1 min was showing some 1 min weakness late in the day as resistance was being hit, this morning so far there is no confirmation of the gap up.

The IWM was close to confirmation, but has since turned down.

The Q's had no 1 min confirmation of the gap up and..

The DIA which looked the worst yesterday didn't even try.

I find the sudden divergence building yesterday, but not firing until today a bit questionable.

From here I'll be looking for the 1 min charts to deteriorate and migration of that through longer charts.

To me, the sudden divergence of 1-day on short term charts is appropriate for a news driven bump.

Putin's Disconnect and other Risk Events

I mentioned this video which was taken just hours ago at the Belbek Air force Base which was taken over Friday by Russian troops using shock grenades. In the video which was shot just hours ago, an unarmed column of Ukrainian soldiers marches toward the base blocked off by Russian military and APC light armor vehicles, shots are fired in the air to warn off the approaching, singing soldiers.

Note the last 10 seconds or so of the video in which heavy machine guns and even what appears to be a bazooka are trained on the Ukrainian soldiers...Exercise? The timing of Putin's statement is ironic given the US State Department says sanctions against Russia are due out in a matter of days, something Putin seemed very worried about, while leaving the subject of the troops that are already in the Ukraine alone completely, just dealing with troops in western Russia saying he has ordered them to return to their bases after exercises are finished Friday.

Don't forget, this Friday we also have the very market sensitive Non-Farm Payrolls.
In any case, given what Putin says and what the reality on the ground is (Ukrainian forces who are unarmed are driven back from their own air force base which was seized in this "Exercise") it seems Putin is hedging and seeing what the economic fallout may look like without pulling all the way back.
,

Putin Backs Down, Futures Soar

Putin essentially has called the invasion of the Ukraine a military excercise and one that ends this week in which troops stationed in western Russia have been ordered back to their bases and Putin says he sees no need for a Russian invasion of the Ukraine although the troops are already there, that point he was a bit fuzzy on. This mo there is a video showing Russian troops firing warning shots toward Ukrainian soilders at the air force base they took over in Crimea using shock grenades so apparantly the military exercise was using live Ukrainians as practice.

The one thing though that sent futures soaring overnight was Putin softening his tone over the Ukraine as you see in ES ...
ES overnight on Putin / Russian military exercise...

As Kerry lands in Kiev today, the one thing Putin seems to be extraordinarily concerned about is sanctions, for example, during his press conference earlier this morning while blasting Ukraine and the illegal overthrow of its elected leader and on just about every other issue he could blame them for,  he also said, The Russian military exercise had been planned long ago (right after the Olympics to harbor more goodwill I suppose); Politics had temporary impact on markets (remember the Russian market closing down 11% yesterday and the central bank rate hike of an nearly unprecedented 150 basis points); Sanctions against Russia would cause "Mutual Damage"; Putin now DOES NOT want to recall the Russian ambassador from the US although he expressly asked for exactly that; He has ordered the Russian government to renew contracts with Ukraine (this is over the threat to hike gas prices via the Russian nationalized Gazprom); Putin "Agrees with protestors demands for new Ukrainian leader", while saying Ukraine suffered an unconstitutional coup.

IT SEEMS THE NEW PRE-COLD WAR WEAPON IS THE SAME AS THE OLD COLD WAR WEAPON ...ECONOMICS AND RUSSIA LOST THAT ONE LAST TIME, PUTIN SEEMS TO REMEMBER THAT ALL TOO WELL.

Then Putin holds a Press conference this morning in which the tone is much different than what we have seen with our eyes, Reuters recaps the news conference, but suddenly Putin is VERY concerned with the economic impact sanctions will have on Russia.

President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia saw no need to use military force in the Crimea region of Ukraine for now, in remarks apparently intended to ease East-West tension over fears of war in the former Soviet republic.

The use of force by Russia in Ukraine would be a choice of last resort, Putin said, and sanctions being considered against Moscow by the West would be counter-productive.

Putin told a news conference at his state residence outside Moscow there had been an "unconstitutional coup" in Ukraine and ousted leader Viktor Yanukovich, an ally of Russia, was still the legitimate leader of the country despite giving up all power.

Earlier on Tuesday, Putin ordered troops involved in a military exercise in western Russia, close to the border with Ukraine, back to their bases.

Russian financial markets rebounded after sharp falls on Monday, and the euro and dollar rose in Japan, though Moscow's forces remained in control of Ukraine's Crimea region, seized bloodlessly after Yanukovich was ousted last month.

Russia paid a heavy financial price on Monday for its military intervention in Ukraine, with stocks, bonds and the rouble plunging as Putin's forces tightened their grip in Crimea, whose population is mainly ethnic Russian.

The Moscow stock market fell more than 10 percent on Monday, wiping nearly $60 billion off the value of Russian firms, but Russian stock indexes rose more than 4 percent early on Tuesday before slipping back again slightly, though still up on the day.

Putin said the turmoil in Russian markets was a "tactical, temporary" decision by investors.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will propose ways for a negotiation between Russia and Ukraine to be overseen by a multilateral organisation when he visits Kiev on Tuesday.

NATO allies will hold emergency talks on the crisis on Tuesday, for the second time in three days.

GAZPROM PRICES

In further pressure on Kiev, Russia's top gas producer Gazprom said it would remove a discount on gas prices for Ukraine from April, Interfax news agency cited the company's chief as saying on Tuesday.

However, Gazprom chief Alexei Miller also said the company could offer Ukraine a loan of $2-3 billion to pay off the country's debt of more than $1.5 billion after Ukraine said it was unable to pay in full for gas deliveries in February, Interfax news agency said.

Putin said at the weekend that he had the right to invade Ukraine to protect Russian interests and citizens after Yanukovich's downfall following months of popular unrest. Russia's Black Sea Fleet has a base in Crimea.

But the military exercises in central and western Russia, which began last week and raised fears that Russia might send forces to Russian-speaking regions of east Ukraine, were completed on schedule.

"The supreme commander of the armed forces of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, gave the order for the troops and units, taking part in the military exercises, to return to their bases," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

Although the end of the exercises had been planned, the announcement sent a more conciliatory message than much of the rhetoric from Russian officials, who say Moscow must defend national interests and those of compatriots in Ukraine.

Putin is dismayed that the new leadership in Ukraine, the cradle of Russian civilisation, has plotted a course towards the European Union and away from what had been Moscow's sphere of influence during generations of Soviet Communist rule.

Moscow's U.N. envoy told a stormy meeting of the Security Council that Yanukovich had sent a letter to Putin requesting he use Russia's military to restore law and order in Ukraine.

Ukraine said observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a pan-European security body, would travel at its invitation to Crimea in an attempt to defuse the military standoff there.

Daily Wrap

We didn't see the high volatility I expect, but we did see increasing volatility today vs. Friday with much of that coming on last night's futures open which carried over to today, keeping the concept of the end of day 3C signals picking up where they left off on the next trading day, even over a weekend as the signals were negative as posted Friday afternoon.

The market in most cases couldn't even manage to close above Friday's lows and the SPX was unable to hold on to a green YTD close with the SPX closing down -0.75% compared to Friday's +0.28%, the Dow down -0.95% which is 3x Friday's +.30% green close, the NDX -0.78% vs Friday's -.10% and the R2K down 0.58% vs Friday's -0.41%.

You saw what I saw today as I brought you all the events intraday as they occurred, one thing I did notice was the late day 3C negative 1 min divergences did fall right around the level of resistance from Friday's lows, for instance...
Note the SPY's resistance from Friday's lows and where the SPY just broke above that level in the afternoon, that's the same time the intraday 1 min went negative...

Here's the SPY 1 min intraday going negative as I posted this afternoon. I mentioned two possibilities, one that the divergence was going to become a larger one with the 1 min sending it toward its lows to accumulate, the second possibility that the divergence that was being built most of the day but fairly weak in most averages was being run over. This introduces a third possibility, the divergences were used to hold the market in place, to stave off further decline or downside, but just didn't have the buying needed to cross resistance at Friday's lows and as such we saw distribution at the resistance level.

I'm afraid we won't know the answer until we get more data, but these are short term day to day moves which I warned about becoming too caught up in, what really matters is the gravitational pull on prices represented by the strongest divergences and the highest probabilities such as...

60 min SPY is where the probabilities or the magnetic pull is, down.

As far as leading indicators...
High Yield Corp Credit which is a lever used to ramp the market has been seeing weakness over the last week, we see it failing to keep up with the SPX (green) today on an intraday basis.

The 2 min chart shows there was some apparent accumulation along the same timeframes as the market averages, 2 min in HYG so we'll see if that continues, but the larger trend in which HYG has supported the market through the February rally is deteriorating badly.

The 10 min trend from accumulation to in line to distribution, this is why I can't see HYG being of much help other than on a very limited basis.

FCT is our professional sentiment indicator and it is clearly leading to the downside, this is not retail, but pros vs the SPX in green.

Again the flight to safety in Bonds has sent Yields lower , one of my favorite Leading Indicators as they have called nearly every major reversal, this is leading negative as yields tend to pull prices toward them.

The bigger picture looks like this...

Yields in line at green arrows and leading the market just before the first downdraft and a significant dislocation now in the short squeeze area, this is one of the largest dislocations in Yields since we started using the LI layout.

I inverted SPX prices (green) intraday so the VXX correlation could be seen, VIX outperformed the SPX today as you can see.

We have a short term slight negative divegrence in VXX 5 min in the red box, however (and this is part of the reason I chose UVXY equity long over VXX calls)...

The longer term divergence on a 15 min chart is leading positive, why would they be collecting a large position of protection during such a strong rally the last several weeks if they didn't know something, the UVXY long position allows me to ride that trend out without worrying about options time decay.

As you can see Spot VIX was bid today for protection as well as it gapped over recent resistance.

The long term TLT (20+ year Treasuries) vs. inverted SPX prices (green) on a 30 min chart also show a long pattern of accumulation of a flight to safety asset while the market was rallying in February.

Very short term the 1 min TLT has a negative divegrence in it much like the market averages we saw today (the two trade opposite of each other), however...

The longer term TLT chart is in line on a strong trend of accumulation in the Flight to Safety trade, this WHILE the market was rallying, again, it seems very clear someone knew something just as we suspected before the move even began.

5 min 30 year treasury futures are in line on the 5 min chart, I'd like to see them pullback to enter a long term primary bull position, but I want to do it on a pullback if it is still possible.

Today we see USD/JPY being held back at resistance around $101.50, well below the former support last week of $102.

And the USD/JPY is acting as the leading asset for ES futures as seen in purple, they are nearly tick for tick trading with the carry pair.

I'll check futures indications later tonight and see what we have, there are clear changes again in character which leads to changes in trends. I do expect volatility to pick up, but that knife cuts both ways.

The Dominant Price/Volume Relationship among the major averages today was Close Down/Volume Down which is strange considering the higher volume day all around, but it was dominant, for example, 20 of the Dow 30, 70 of the NASDAQ 100, 819 of the R2K and 350 of the S&P-500.

This relationship has the least influence, almost none, but it is interesting given the overall higher volume today. This is the hallmark relationship of a bear market, but otherwise it rarely has a next day implication like some of the others do.

Important Update

We have seen a positive intraday divergence growing most of the day in the 4 major averages, some pretty weak, the SPY probably the most respectable. You are familiar with the concept of migration, when a divergence moves from a shorter duration timeframe like 2 minutes to appearing on a longer duration timeframe like 3 and then maybe 5 minutes,  this is telling us that the divergence is gaining in strength, we haven't seen a lot of that today.

The other concept is all new divergences will start on the shortest duration timeframes first like 1 min. For example, if there was a 3 min positive built up on say the QQQ intraday and then suddenly the 1 min chart started going negative, that would be the first hint we have of distribution of that divergence that had been built most of the day. What we don't know immediately is "Why?". In many cases it is the divegrence failing and those who built it removing their money from the market as new information they have learned is discounted. A second possibility is just like with GLD but on a much shorter timeframe, the longer term charts (say GLD 60 and SPY 5 min today) are in need of a pullback to create a larger base (as in the GLD 30 min negative to pull it back to increase the size of the 60 min positive or perhaps a 1 min negative SPY to pull it back to increase the size of the 5 min positive).

We simply don't know what is behind the distribution, but it always shows up as a new divegrence on the earliest timeframes first. If that divergence migrates and destroys the 2 min positive that was in effect and replaces it with a negative, we have a better idea that the positive divegrence that was being built today is being run over, it would likely not trigger. However if we start seeing accumulation among intraday charts as price pulls back due to the 1 min negative steering divegrence, then we know it is likely that a larger "W" like base is being formed.

All we know right now is that there are a couple of fairly severe 1 min negatives that have just really made their mark on the charts.

SPY 1 min leading negative, it has caused some damage on the 2 min chart already, the 5 min chart remains intact as it was seen just 30 minutes or so ago.

1 min QQQ is even worse now since this capture, but it has not effected the QQQ 2 min chart at all yet.

The IWM 1 min has also seen more deterioration with the 1 min leading to a new low on the day, the 2 and 3 min charts haven't moved much, but they were never impressive to start with.

DIA 1 min leading negative has done some damage to the 2 min chart, the 3 min chart remains as it was.

I was looking at Leading Indicators when I saw this so I'll update them as well.
